Kamala Harris Faces Backlash for ‘Fake’ Accent at Labor Day Rally in Detroit; Critics Slam Frequent Dialect Changes
Democratic Party Presidential candidate Kamala Harris is facing a backlash for speaking in a different accent at the Labor Day rally in Detroit. Her accent has been compared by netizens to Foghorn Leghorn, a well-known Looney Tunes character.
Detroit which is also known as the motor city was the perfect venue for Harris who spent her Monday holiday hoping to shore up blue-collar union workers in the critical battleground state that she wants to keep blue in the November election.

Harris was speaking to a crowd with a noticeable shift in her dialect and said,
“You better thank a union member for the five-day work week. You better thank a union member for sick leave. You better thank a union member for paid leave. You better thank a union member for vacation time.”
Netizens were quick to react to Harris’ changed accent and one conservative X account Johnny MAGA shared a clip knocking Harris’ latest Detroit speech as cringeworthy and fake.
Kamala Harris was flanked by labor union leaders when Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris was addressing union workers during a campaign event on September 02, 2024 at Northwestern High School in Detroit, Michigan.
Trump senior advisor Stephen Miller reacted,
“This is her seventh new accent in four weeks. She has literally never used this accent before. She grew up in Canada. Phoniest politician in all of politics.”
Professor and podcast host Gad Saad expressed his disapproval of what he termed as inauthenticity.
GOP strategist Matt Whitlock stated,
“All of politics is a performance to Kamala Harris. She changes fake accents like she changes policy positions and political personas. Today she’s talking in a fake southern accent, pretending to be a moderate. Next week she’ll be back to San Francisco liberal.”
Trump campaign managers were quick to seize the opportunity and pointed out that Harris used a similar line hours later in a speech to union workers in Pittsburgh, but without the noticeable accent.
This is not the first time that Kamala has been criticized for using a phoney accent.
During a rally in Atlanta, she was accused of using a false Southern accent and in 2021 she was again criticized for using a “French accent” while touring a Covid-19 lab in France.
Harris was born to an Indian mother and Caribbean father and was born in Oakland, California, and grew up in the Bay Area.
She has no Southern roots.
Harris’ maternal grandparents were from a village in Thulasenthirapuram in Tamil Nadu.
