Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year on July 26. The day is to honor the valor and sacrifice of Indian soldiers who laid down their lives for the country in the 1999 Kargil War. In 2024, the day will fall on Friday, July 26, and this year the 25th anniversary will be celebrated.
Kargil Vijay Diwas marks the victory of the Kargil War that took place in 1999. The war showcased the valor and struggle of the Indian Army who drove out Pakistani troops and terrorists from the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir. The war marked the successful conclusion of Operation Vijay, which enabled India to defend its borders and achieve victory.
After the 1971 Indo-Pak War, tensions between Pakistan and India grew. Both countries deployed troops on the Siachen Glacier and conducted nuclear tests in 1998, which further worsened relations. To reduce this tension, steps were taken towards a peaceful resolution through the Lahore Declaration in February 1999.
However, in May 1999, Pakistani troops and militants crossed the Indian Line of Control (LoC) and occupied high positions in the Kargil district. Following this intrusion, the Indian Army launched Operation Vijay, which started the Kargil War. The day is an occasion to remember the determination and bravery of the Indian Army and is dedicated to the valor of our armed forces.
Under Operation Vijay, the Indian Army carried out the task of removing Pakistani troops who had infiltrated the high-altitude area of Kargil. The operation involved intense fighting in difficult mountainous terrain, in which Indian soldiers displayed unparalleled courage and tenacity. On 26 July 1999, the Indian Army announced the complete withdrawal of Pakistani forces from Indian soil.
Kargil Vijay Diwas is not just a commemoration of a military victory, but it is a day when the supreme sacrifice of Indian soldiers is honored. Celebrating this day reminds the countrymen of the spirit of sacrifice, courage, and unity.
