The Karnataka Hijab Row has been making headlines for the past few days. A controversy over the hijab or headscarf worn by Muslim girls has escalated in coastal Karnataka, with several political leaders voicing their condemnation on twitter. How Karnataka Hijab Row begun?

Six female students belonging to the Government PU College for Girls in Udupi claimed that they were not allowed to attend classes for consecutive 15 days, because of comiang school wearing Hijab. The group led protest on December 31, 2021 claiming that they had been denied access in class for more than 15 days now and wanted an solid solution.

In a meeting with students, Udupi MLA Raghupathi Bhat told them to follow the college’s dress code in class. The six girls ignored this advisory and chose not attend classes and instead stay away from school. The students also filed a writ petition in the Karnataka High Court, and approached India’s National Human Rights Commission.

Why did the Karnataka Hijab Row constroversy become a national issue?

When some hindu students of Government Pre University College in Kundapur heard about the protest of muslim girls, they decided to show their opposition by reaching school sporting saffron shawls.

In a meeting with parents and students, Kundapura MLA Haladi Srinivas Shetty asked that the college’s dress code be followed until government makes its decision. Some girl classmates have been wearing hijabs for five days now according to him. The girl students have argued that they cannot be forced to stay out of college following a “sudden change in the dress code” which bars them from wearing hijabs. To resist the wearing of hijabs, several Hindu boys have been turning up in saffron shawls. But they too cannot enter classrooms.

The Karnataka Hijab Row Constroversy took a new mode when students from IDSG Government First Grade College arrived at Chikkamagaluru’s campus. They arrived here wearing blue shawls that caught everyone’s focus. They also chanted”Jai Bhim” and supported Muslim girls rights to wear hijabs in college as part of their religious practice.

How is the state government handling the whole situation?

The order from the Karnataka government states that students must comply with college dress codes.

The Minister of Education, Government of Karnataka has said that they will be follow the rules set out by Karnataka Educational Act 2013 and 2018, prescribing uniforms of schools/colleges for students.
