The main attraction of Karthigai Deepam is the lighting of Mahadeepam on the Arunachala Hill. This huge lamp is lit by pouring ghee in it in the evening. During this divine moment, the atmosphere reverberates with the chanting of “Annamalaiyarukku Aarohara!” Thousands of devotees circumambulate the Arunachala hill, called Girivalam. This 14-km circumambulation is done while chanting sacred mantras, which symbolize the destruction of sins and spiritual purification.
