Kerala CPI-M finds relief as disenchanted ex-MLA decides to remain with party

Kochi, Mar 21 (IANS) – Speculation surrounding the possible defection of three-time former Kerala CPI-M legislator S. Rajendran to the BJP seemed to have settled down on Thursday after the Left leader reassured top party officials that he will not take any actions to harm the CPI-M.

Rajendran was reportedly seen at the Delhi residence of senior BJP leader Prakash Javadekar, sparking rumors of a potential switch in political allegiance. However, Rajendran clarified that the meeting was not political and affirmed his commitment to the CPI-M.

Sources revealed that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan intervened and spoke to Rajendran, who then assured party officials that he will not engage in any activities that could jeopardize the party’s position leading up to the Lok Sabha polls.

Despite the reassurances, Rajendran indicated that he may not actively participate in the election campaign, hinting at possible discontent within the party. Rajendran had previously served as a prominent CPI-M leader in the Idukki district and represented the Devikulam Assembly constituency for three terms.

The rift between Rajendran and the party reportedly intensified after his request for a ticket in the 2021 Assembly polls was rejected. Additionally, a disciplinary probe found Rajendran guilty of gross indiscipline, leading to a recommendation for his expulsion from the party for a year.

In response to the speculation surrounding his political future, Rajendran affirmed his commitment to the CPI-M and clarified that the meeting with Javadekar was not indicative of any plans to defect to the BJP.
