Kerala High Court permits doctor accused of aiding girlfriend’s suicide to resume PG classes

In a recent development, the Kerala High Court has allowed a doctor accused of abetting his girlfriend’s suicide to rejoin his postgraduate classes. Dr. Ruwais, the accused, had been in custody following the death of his girlfriend, Dr. Shahana, in December last year, allegedly due to dowry demands.

Dr. Ruwais, who heads the Kerala Medical Post Graduate Association (KMPGA), had faced arrest after reports surfaced that his girlfriend had taken her own life due to dowry demands from his family. Despite getting bail, he sought permission to resume his studies, which was initially granted by a single bench but later set aside by a division bench.

The division bench, however, instructed that disciplinary proceedings against Dr. Ruwais be expedited and the report be presented before the single bench. Based on this report, the court directed the Indian Medical Association to reinstate the petitioner, with a caveat that the reinstatement would be subject to the outcome of the court’s decision.

The court specified that if the punishment is upheld, the reinstatement would not be considered valid for practical purposes. The case has been scheduled for further hearing on May 21. Dr. Ruwais’ request to join his postgraduate classes has been granted, albeit with conditions, marking a significant development in the ongoing legal proceedings surrounding the case.
