Kerala hospital performs rare surgical procedure on critically-ill youth

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 22 (IANS) – KIMS Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram has successfully performed the percutaneous mesocaval shunt procedure, which is only the third such surgery in the country. The surgery was performed on a 25-year-old youth suffering from a rare abdominal disease, alleviating his unbearable pain.

The patient had a blockage in the portal vein, leading to high blood pressure in the portal vein and esophageal veins. The procedure, done through a small pinhole, was led by Manish Kumar Yadav, Senior Consultant, Neurointerventional Radiology Department, and lasted for three hours. The use of intravascular ultrasound and abdominal ultrasound helped accomplish the procedure with greater precision, and the patient is recovering well.

The successful performance of the percutaneous mesocaval shunt procedure at KIMS Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram is a milestone in the medical field. This third such surgery in the country is an important development in the treatment of rare abdominal diseases, and the innovative use of technology in the procedure promises a brighter future for patients with similar conditions.
