Kisan Diwas or National farmers day is observed on 23rd December. This day is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh.
The famous leader was born to a middle-class family of farmers in Noorpur, Meerut in 1902. Later, he became the 5th Prime Minister of India. He is known for making contributions to empowering the farmers of India. He served as a Prime Minister from 1979 to 1980. He is behind the Debt Redemption Bill of 1939 which relieved the farmers who were in debt. He also abolished the Zamindari by introducing Zamindari Abolition Act in 1950, as well as serving as the Agricultural Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
He used to work with full dedication to uplift the situation of Indian farmers during his time as Prime Minister of India. He also set up many welfare programmes that cater for farmers. Before this, he was working as a freedom fighter and was known for having a soft spot for those who have been oppressed. He spent most of his time writing and reading books and was known to live a simple, sober life. During his lifetime, he has published many books including India’s Poverty and its Solution, Co-operative Farming X-rayed, and Abolition of Zamindari.
