National Farmers Day or Kisan Diwas is being celebrated every year on 23 December in India. It is dedicated to the contribution of farmers, who are the backbone of the country’s economy, as well as it is also the birth anniversary of the fifth Prime Minister of India, Chaudhary Charan Singh. Charan Singh’s life is a proof that even a person coming from ordinary background can reach extraordinary heights with his unique efforts.
Chaudhary Charan Singh, a small farmer family man born in Uttar Pradesh, played important steps in the development of Indian agriculture and the welfare of farmers. From freedom struggle to post-independence, he introduced many bills that were in favor of farmers.
During his period as Prime Minister from 1979 to 1980, he initiated a number of schemes for improving the social condition of farmers. For his efforts, the Government of India decided to celebrate his birthday as Kisan Diwas in 2001.
India is an agricultural country, where about 50% of the population depends on agriculture for their livelihood. Food security and rural development in the country have been possible only due to the hard work of farmers. The purpose of Kisan Diwas is to spread awareness among people about the role of farmers and their economic and social welfare.
Many events take place across the country on this day, and the main point of these events is motivating farmers towards their role and their problems’ solutions. Simultaneously, agricultural scientists teach new techniques and methods of production to farmers.
Kisan Diwas is not only a day to pay tribute to farmers but also a day to understand the importance of the agricultural sector of the country and to thank the society towards them. This day reminds us that without the hard work of farmers, the progress of the country is impossible. Adopting Chaudhary Charan Singh’s ideals and following up on the steps taken towards helping farmers can further empower the agricultural sector.
