KIUG 2023: Sans certified coach, Manipur's Alson Singh wins men’s discus throw gold
Oinam Alson Singh, a discus thrower from Manipur University, won gold at the 4th edition of the Khelo India University Games 2023. Despite lacking a certified coach, he relied on his uncles for guidance and training. Alson’s journey to success was marked by overcoming challenges and injuries, allowing him to shine on the podium.
Alson’s dedication to the sport became evident when he fought back from an injury in 2022 to deliver a stellar performance at the AFI Open Nationals. His consistent podium finishes and personal best throws caught the attention of the Indian Navy, who offered him a sports officer’s position. The lack of a professional coach made his victory even more fulfilling, as he celebrated his first gold at the Khelo India University Games.
Originally from Thoubal district, Alson admitted that his technical skills in discus throw are lacking due to the absence of a certified coach. Despite this, he managed to secure the top spot at KIUG with a throw of 51.24m. His reliance on his uncles for training tips and basics highlights the importance of perseverance and self-motivation in achieving success in the absence of proper coaching.
Alson’s journey in the sport began during his time in Kerala, where he first received training. Moving to different cities for education, he eventually settled in Guwahati to focus on discus throw. Facing initial setbacks and failures in competitions, he used those experiences to improve and refine his skills. With the guidance of his uncles and his determination to learn and grow, Alson continues to strive for excellence in the sport he loves.
