KIUG 2023: Sonia’s anchor-leg hand 4×100 relay gold to Chaudhary Ranbir Singh University (round-up)

In a thrilling 4x100m relay final at the 4th Khelo India University Games 2023, Sonia from Chaudhary Ranbir Singh University staged a remarkable comeback on the anchor leg to secure gold. The quartet clocked 48.61s to claim victory, overtaking University of Calicut and Mahatma Gandhi University.

Sonia shared her special feeling before the race, stating, “I could go quite fast in the anchor leg.” She dedicated the win to coach Surender Singh’s birthday, expressing happiness for delivering for the team. Chandigarh University maintained their lead in the overall medal standings, crossing the 50-medal mark with 23 gold, 15 silver, and 16 bronze medals.

Lovely Professional University held onto second place with 12 gold, 10 silver, and three bronze medals. Jain University secured two gold medals through Kusuma Ravada and the women’s tennis team, bringing their tally to 10 gold, 6 silver, and 6 bronze. KIIT University claimed the men’s tennis team gold with a 2-1 victory over SRM University.

In fencing, Manipur University’s W. Sonia Devi stunned Riya Bakshi of Guru Nanak Dev University in the Women’s Foil category. Bakshi, a previous gold medalist, was defeated 15-10 by Devi, who showed an aggressive approach. Vikas Khodke from Shivaji University tripped near the finish line in the 110m hurdles, settling for silver as Sahil Gedam of University of Mumbai claimed gold.

Overall, the Khelo India University Games showcased fierce competition and outstanding performances from athletes across various disciplines, highlighting the talents and dedication of Indian university students.–IANS
