KTM, the Austrian motorcycle giant, is gearing up for a major transformation in the Indian market with the launch of the highly anticipated KTM 650 Duke. The motorcycle is designed to directly compete with the Yamaha MT-07, catering to Indian riding conditions and preferences.
According to a report by SpeedWeek, the KTM 650 Duke is set to be a modified version of the KTM 790 Duke, featuring the proven LC8c inline-twin engine with a reduced displacement of around 650cc. This power output is expected to be under 70 bhp, making it suitable for both city traffic and highway cruising.
One of the key changes in the KTM 650 Duke is the focus on rider comfort. Unlike the more aggressively positioned models in the Duke lineup, the 650 Duke will offer a more relaxed riding position with revised footpeg placement and a new handlebar. This shift towards comfort is aimed at capturing the growing segment of Indian riders who prioritize comfort along with performance.
In a collaborative effort, KTM is also working on the development of the 490 Duke in partnership with Chinese manufacturer CF Moto. The new 490 Duke is expected to borrow the engine and frame from the CF Moto 450NK, but will receive a complete KTM makeover with new chassis parts and a distinct design language tailored to Indian riders.
Looking ahead, the launch of the KTM 650 Duke is anticipated by spring 2026, while the future of the KTM 790 Duke remains uncertain. With an expanded naked bike portfolio ranging from single-cylinder options to inline twin offerings, including the flagship 1390 Super Duke R Evo, KTM is strategically positioning itself to dominate the Indian mid-range naked bike segment.
This strategic shift reflects KTM’s commitment to the Indian market and its dedication to offering a wide range of options for both power-hungry enthusiasts and comfort-seeking riders.
