La Liga: Girona's title hope fades in loss to Bilbao
Athletic Bilbao Shocks Girona with 3-2 Win
In a thrilling match at the San Mames Stadium, Athletic Bilbao delivered a blow to Girona’s La Liga title hopes with a 3-2 victory. Alex Berenguer scored twice for Bilbao, while Inaki Williams netted the third. Viktor Tsygankov and Eric Garcia scored for Girona, who are now six points behind leaders Real Madrid.
In the second minute, high pressure from Bilbao led to Berenguer intercepting a pass and scoring with a powerful left-foot shot. Bilbao keeper Unai Simon made a crucial save from Tsygankov’s left-foot effort, before the home side took control in midfield.
Despite losing right-back Inigo Lekue to injury, Bilbao continued to press forward. Tsygankov leveled for Girona at the start of the second half, but Berenguer’s second and a goal from Williams put the game out of Girona’s reach.
Garcia scored for Girona to add drama to the closing minutes, and play was halted for six minutes due to a fan suffering an epileptic fit in the stands. In a frantic last few minutes, Simon denied Savio and Vivian saved a goalbound effort off the line.
This win gives Bilbao the chance of a top-four finish in La Liga, and puts a major dent in Girona’s title hopes. With Girona now six points behind Real Madrid and Bilbao in fifth place, the race for the title is heating up in La Liga.
