Lachit Diwas is celebrated on November 24 every year in Assam, which was dedicated to remember the bravery and extraordinary powers of general Lachit Borphukan. Lachit Borphukan was born on November 24, 1622, in Choraydeo district. He is particularly remembered for his unequalled leadership and strategic skills in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671. The day aims to pay tribute to the valor of Lachit Borphukan and his contribution to the history of Assam.
He was born in a Tai Ahom family. His father’s name was Mamai Tamuli Borbarua. Lachit Borphukan was the supreme commander, or Borphukan, of the Ahom army and led the army under King Pratap Singh. Lachit Borphukan’s contribution was not only in the military field but also in being a skilled strategist, wise leader, and a valiant warrior.
He greatly showed his bravery in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671 against the invading force from the Mughal Empire in Assam. It helped the Ahom army emerge victorious at the end against the Mughal army, which happened to be the last major invasion plan of the Mughal Empire then.
The Battle of Saraighat was held in 1671 at Saraighat (now Guwahati, Assam) on the banks of the Brahmaputra River. Raja Ram Singh led the Mughal army, while the army of the Ahoms was led by Lachit Borphukan. The Mughal army comprised 30,000 infantry, 15,000 archers, 18,000 Turkish cavalry, 5,000 gunners, and over 1000 cannons along with many boats. But the number of troops in the Ahom army was quite smaller than that of the Mughal army.
Lachit Borphukan countered not only the maximum resources and power of the Mughal army but also used the tactics of guerrilla warfare, psychological warfare, and diplomatic moves, making perfect use of local geography. The Ahom army led by Lachit defeated the Mughal army and made the Mughals retreat from Guwahati.
This victory of Lachit shattered the plan of expansion of the Mughal Empire in Assam and became a turning point in history.
Lachin Diwas is observed on 24 November, which also happens to be the birthday of Lachit Borphukan. His unequalled courage, strategy, and war skills are remembered in Assam on this day. This day offers an opportunity to pay tribute to the glorious military tradition of Assam.
The state government organizes various programs on Lachit Diwas, such as speeches by government employees in memory of Lachit Borphukan; discussions about his contributions; and floral tributes laid at his memorials to pay homage to him. Many cultural and historical programs are organized with the theme of the bravery of Lachit Borphukan.
