Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti 2022: Lal Bahadur Shastri was India’s 2nd Prime Minister, and today the whole country’s celebrating Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti. He is considered to be the greatest Indian leader of all time. Lal Bahadur Shastri is known for his contribution to the freedom struggle for India’s independence. 

Lal Bahadur Shastri was born on 2nd October 1904 in Mughalsarai, United Provinces of Agra, and Oudh, British India. He was fondly known as Shastri Ji with his legacy that is still continuing to inspire many today. 

He is the mastermind behind the White Revolution. A national campaign was organised to increase the production and supply of milk in the country. Due to that, he supported Amul milk, co-operative of Anand, Gujarat and created the National Dairy Development Board. The main aim behind the campaign was to boost the country’s food production after independence. Apart from that, in 1965 he also promoted  Green Revolution in India to enhance food grain production in the states such as Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

He was responsible to lead the country during the infamous Indo-Pakistan War in 1965. The slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” (“Hail to the soldier; Hail to the farmer”) is still popular to this day. Although the war ended on 10th January 1966 with Tashkent Agreement. 

He also worked for the upliftment of Harijans in Muzaffarpur. He encouraged his message by dropping his surname “Srivastava”. Lal Bahadur Shastri’s vision, as well as thoughts, were heavily influenced by Swami Vivekananda, Gandhi and Annie Besant. Influenced by Gandhi, he joined the Indian independence movement in the 1920s. 

Following India’s independence in 1947, Lal Bahadur Shastri joined the Indian government as one of the Prime Minister’s key cabinet colleagues. He was the first Railways Minister (1951–56) and later was appointed to numerous significant positions in the Indian government, such as Home Minister.
