Lala Lajpat Rai was a popular and famous freedom fighter from India. He took birth on January 28, 1865, in Dudhike, Punjab. Along with being a freedom fighter, he was also a legendary leader, activist, politician, and prolific writer. For Lala Lajpat Rai’s strong nationalism, he was given the name, “Lion of Punjab” or “Punjab Kesari.” His role and responsibility in the Swadeshi movement was commendable.
Lala Lajpat Rai requested and urged Indians to use “made in India” goods by boycotting the importance of imported goods. His mother’s religious beliefs and his father’s liberal views influenced him greatly. He completed his early education in Punjab. Later, he went to a government college in Lahore in 1880 and founded The Arya Gazette. Lala Lajpat Rai contributed to numerous newspapers while he was active. In 1917, he also went to America and returned to India in 1920. Rai led the non-cooperation movement.
Lala Lajpat Rai’s Death
Indian citizens across the country protested against the Simon Commission in 1928. The commission had no Indians and only British members. Rai led a peaceful march in this regard, however, got lathis from the British police. Thus, Lala Lajpat Rai was injured severely and breathed his last on November 17, 1928.
