Is LAUSD Reopening Schools Amid Ongoing Los Angeles Wildfires?

The widespread wildfires in Los Angeles have affected every aspect of the daily life of the city including educational institutions. After a weeklong closure due to widespread wildfires, The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) in a statement has said that most schools will reopen on January 13, 2025.

Improved weather quality, containment of the wildfires and road accessibility have prompted the authorities to reopen the schools. Authorities have done thorough evaluations of various safety factors and ensured that campuses are safe for students and staff.

LAUSD Announces Partial Reopening of Schools Amid Los Angeles Wildfires

However some schools will remain closed and this includes seven schools in heavily affected areas. Howeve,r the schools have been instructed to follow strict protocols and the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) will be continuously monitoring the situation. Updates will be available on the website of LAUSD and parents and the staff have been advised to stay informed and follow the guidelines strictly.

The official tweet reads,

“We have considered a number of factors, including improved fire containment, air quality, wind conditions, utility availability, road accessibility, school-site readiness and staffing. Recognizing there are employees and families directly impacted by the fires, a number of resources have been prepared to help address ongoing needs, including employee assistance, securing substitute coverage, and managing other logical challenges.”

The notice also stipulates that the schools which are commencing operations will be strictly following the inclement weather schedule which curtails outdoor and athletic activities. All the school staff and the students will be provided with masks.

  • Kenter Canyon Charter Elementary
  • Palisades Charter Elementary
  • Marquez Charter Elementary
  • Topanga Charter Elementary
  • Lanai Road Elementary
  • Paul Revere Middle School

LAUSD has stated that these schools will reopen as soon as the conditions improve and it is safe to commence studies.

Alberto M. Carvalho, the superintendent of LAUSD had earlier stated that an important decision on opening the schools would be taken on Monday. Superintendent Carvalho also stated that LAUSD will offer five days leave for employees who were forced to relocate or evacuate due to the wildfires. Employees will be additionally given $500, access to free child care, and the option to cash out vacation days.
