Leopard skin seized by Odisha STF team, one person arrested

The Special Task Force (STF) of Odisha Crime Branch has made a significant arrest in Phiringia, Kandhamal district, seizing a leopard skin. Belarsen Kanhar, 43, was apprehended during a raid and found in possession of the illegal item, along with cash and other incriminating materials.

Following a tip-off, the STF, in collaboration with Kandhamal Police, conducted a successful raid at Manipadar village, leading to the arrest of Kanhar. The accused could not provide any documentation to justify his possession of the leopard skin, leading to his apprehension and further legal action.

“One leopard skin, Rs 5,500 in cash and other incriminating materials were recovered from his possession,” stated an STF source. A case has been registered against Kanhar under various sections of the IPC and the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. Investigations are ongoing to uncover any potential links to wildlife trafficking rings.

Efforts to combat illegal wildlife trade continue to be a top priority for law enforcement agencies, with a focus on cracking down on poaching and trafficking networks. The arrest of Kanhar serves as a reminder of the ongoing threat to endangered species and the importance of strict enforcement of wildlife protection laws.

Authorities are urging the public to report any suspicious activities related to wildlife crimes to help in the fight against illegal trafficking and poaching. The successful operation in Phiringia highlights the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies in preserving biodiversity and protecting endangered species from exploitation.
