Licenses of two blood banks in Hyderabad cancelled for selling plasma

The Drugs Control Administration of Telangana has cancelled the licenses of two blood banks in Hyderabad for illegally selling human plasma. The licenses of Srikara Hospital Blood Centre and New Life Educational Society Blood Centre were revoked in connection with an illegal plasma collection racket. The illegal plasma collection was discovered during a raid at Haemo Service Laboratories in Moosapet on February 2. The firm was found to be stockpiling human plasma for unauthorized sale.

According to the Drugs Control Administration (DCA), R. Raghavendra Naik has been operating Haemo Service Laboratories illegally, collecting plasma from various blood banks and selling it without authorization. The DCA officers confirmed that Srikara Hospital Blood Bank and New Life Educational Society Blood Centre were involved in the illegal sale of plasma to Haemo Service Laboratories. This violation of norms led to the immediate cancellation of their licenses.

Plasma is typically separated from whole blood through a process called plasmapheresis, and it must be frozen within six hours to preserve its integrity. The DCA issued show cause notices to the two blood banks for their violations of blood bank norms and the illegal sale of plasma. The Director General of DCA, Kamalasan Reddy, emphasized the importance of preventing such activities in blood banking practices to protect public health.

In response to the illegal sale of plasma, the DCA took the decision to cancel the licenses of the two blood banks in the larger public interest. Reddy also warned of stringent action against any further violators, emphasizing the need for blood banks to implement stringent measures to prevent such illegal activities.

The cancellation of the licenses of the two blood banks in Hyderabad serves as a warning to the medical community about the serious consequences of engaging in unauthorized practices related to blood banking and plasma collection.
