LK Advani: Architect of BJP’s Ascendancy and Top Veteran Leader

New Delhi, March 30 (IANS) Lal Krishna Advani, a prominent leader of the BJP, played a key role in shaping the party’s journey to national prominence. From his early days with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh to his tenure as Deputy Prime Minister, Advani’s political career has been noteworthy.

LK Advani, born in Karachi, British India in 1927, migrated to India after Partition. He played a pivotal role in the formation of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) in 1951 and later transitioned to the BJP in 1980 along with Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

His contribution as the Information and Broadcasting Minister during the Janata Party coalition government was marked by reforms aimed at safeguarding the freedom of the media. Advani’s Rath Yatras in the 1990s were instrumental in popularizing the BJP’s agenda across the country.

Advani’s parliamentary career spanned nearly three decades, during which he held key positions such as Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government. He also served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha after the party’s defeat in the 2004 general elections.

In recognition of his long-standing contribution to Indian politics, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi government announced on February 3, 2024, that LK Advani would be conferred with the prestigious Bharat Ratna award. Advani’s legacy as a stalwart of the BJP and a towering figure in Indian politics remains indelible.
