LMC considers implementing a token system for voters in polling stations
Lucknow Municipal Corporation is planning to introduce a token system for voters at polling booths during the upcoming elections on May 20. This initiative aims to ease long queues and provide a comfortable voting experience for citizens, especially amidst the forecasted heatwave during peak summer.
Municipal Commissioner Inderjit Singh will present the proposal for the token system before the Election Commission on Friday. The idea is inspired by a similar initiative introduced by the ECI in Jharkhand during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls to cater to the convenience of the elderly.
Singh emphasized the importance of providing adequate facilities such as seating, sunshades, wheelchairs, and parking near polling stations to enhance the voting experience. He highlighted the various challenges faced by voters, including long waiting times, difficulty in locating names on voter lists, and insufficient amenities at polling booths.
The LMC plans to collaborate with various stakeholders, utilize social media for voter education, and organize campaigns to make voting more accessible for all demographics. Additionally, initiatives like partnering with Residents Welfare Associations, government departments, malls, parks, and leveraging IPL matches for voter awareness are also in the pipeline.
Furthermore, efforts will be made to spread awareness through signage in public places and LMC vehicles providing services like drinking water and garbage collection. The aim is to ensure a smooth voting process and address voter dissatisfaction due to inadequate facilities and long waiting times at polling stations.
The Lucknow Municipal Corporation is gearing up to propose the token system to the Election Commission to enhance the voting experience for citizens during the upcoming elections. With a focus on improving facilities and amenities at polling booths, the initiative aims to make voting more accessible and convenient for all voters.
