Maha Shivratri is the annual Hindu festival honouring Lord Shiva. On this day, devotees like to keep fast and worship the deity to seek his blessing and bring positivity to their life. Usually, the festival is celebrated in the Chaturdashi Tithi, a Krishna Paksha during the month of Magha as per Drik Panchang. This year i.e 2023 Mahashivratri will be observed on 18th February Saturday. The Chaturdashi Tithi will start at 20:02 and end on 19th February at 16:18. Although the Ratri Prahar Puja will be celebrated on the 18th.

The celebration of Mahashivratri is about the marriage of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. Furthermore, on this day, Shiva also rescued the world from destruction by drinking a pot full of poison. It came out of the struggle for supremacy between Vishnu and Brahma.

Another story related to the festival is from Shiv Purana. It mentions a day when Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, and Lord Vishnu, the protector of the universe started arguing about who is more superior. Later, Lord Shiva was asked by the god to handle the conflict and realise the futility of the struggle i.e Shiva turned into a Lingam.

The dispute between Vishnu and Brahma was separated through a “Lingam” (Shiva Linga). It doesn’t have any end or beginning because it comes from the sky and passed in between clouds.
