Spiritual Speaker Maha Vishnu Arrested in Chennai After Controversial ‘Rebirth and Karma’ Speech At Govt School

Spiritual speaker Maha Vishnu, who created a huge ruckus with his ‘rebirth and karma’ speech at two government schools in Chennai on September 5 on the occasion of Teacher’s Day, has been arrested.

He was arrested at the airport after he landed from an overseas trip and was later produced before a magistrate who remanded him to judicial custody.

Spiritual Leader Maha Vishnu Detained in Chennai

He was charged under various sections of the BNS and the Rights of Persons with Disability Act, 2016, based on a complaint against him.

The spiritual leader was invited to deliver a motivational talk to students but he instead diverted the focus of his speech to spiritual themes like rebirth, karma, and sin.

This led to an altercation with a school staff member who objected to the speech.

In his speech, the spiritual leader blamed the students for their difficulties. Maha Vishnu also blamed the British for destroying the ancient tradition of learning in Gurukuls.

He also stated that chanting certain mantras can cause a rain of fire, cure ailments, and also make a person fly. His most controversial take was still to come.

Maha Vishnu said,

“If God was kind, everyone should be born equal. One is born rich or poor, a criminal or a hero. Why such differences? You have been given in this life based on what you did in your previous birth,”

This was when a differently-abled teacher Shankar challenged his statements.

The left-wing student organizations, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), held demonstrations against the ‘Spiritual Awakening classes’ organized by Maha Vishnu in government schools.

The left-wing organizations also questioned the Tamil Nadu Department of Education over the classes and asked them to take strict actions as they protested before the Ashok Nagar Government Higher Secondary School.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin did not directly react to the incident but in a post on X said,

“Our high-quality textbooks contain the best scientific ideas that students need to know. The teachers themselves can bring out the best ideas needed to face future challenges with confidence and sharpen the knowledge. Actions will be taken by the School Education Department to provide the necessary innovative training, social education with appropriate departmental experts and scholars.
