Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, social reformer and a strong supporter of Dalits, passed away on 6 December 1956. Every year, this day is observed as ‘Mahaparinirvan Diwas’. This day is not just to commemorate his contributions but also to recognize his principles, his life’s struggles, and the social changes that he brought about. Dr. Ambedkar’s followers and millions of people worship his statues on this very day and conduct various religious and cultural programs in his tribute.
He was born on 14 April 1891. He became an active voice against casteism, untouchability, and social discrimination in Indian society. His life was full of struggle but he never lost hope. Rather he struggled throughout his life to bring a change in the society. He also had a very important role to play in drafting the Indian Constitution. His efforts to bring change at every level in the Indian society made him one of the greatest leaders as well as a great social reformer.
Dr. Ambedkar contributed to the Constitution, and apart from that, he always worked towards education, employment and social justice for the most vulnerable sections of Indian society. He wanted to establish equality between the upper and lower classes of society. For that, he embraced Buddhism on 14 October 1956 and converted millions of his followers to Buddhism.
The name of Mahaparinirvana Day is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘parinirvana’, which means ‘liberation’ or ‘state after nirvana’. In Buddhism, parinirvana is the state when a person attains salvation by being free from worldly desires and sorrows. The death of Dr. Ambedkar has also been regarded as ‘Mahaparinirvana’ by his followers, because in his life he aimed for ending the inequalities prevailing in the society and proved, through his actions, that he was a great guru.
This day is observed throughout the country on 6 December as a tribute to Dr. Ambedkar, especially at Chaityabhoomi in Dadar where his Samadhi is situated. This day is of great importance for Buddhists and followers of Ambedkar. Lakhs of people gather at Chaityabhoomi and Buddhist monks chant sacred hymns, paying respect to Baba Saheb’s contributions and taking a pledge to follow his guidance.
On the occasion of Mahaparinirvana Diwas, the Maharashtra government has declared 6 December 2024 as a local holiday in Mumbai and its suburbs. This day will be celebrated as the 69th death anniversary of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. This decision of the Maharashtra government is especially important for employees who work in government and semi-government offices, as the offices in these areas will remain closed on this day. This holiday is to honor the social contribution of Dr. Ambedkar and his important role in the making of the Constitution.
This notification was released by the General Administration Department of Maharashtra, which clearly mentioned that all state and semi-government offices will be closed in these regions. On this day, huge crowds are expected to gather at Chaityabhoomi and surrounding areas in Dadar, where Dr Ambedkar’s conversion and his works are celebrated.
