Sandeshkhali unrest: Women stage fresh stir against another Trinamool leader

Kolkata, Feb 27 (IANS) Local women in Sandeshkhali staged a protest in front of Trinamool leader Shankar Sardar’s residence, blaming him for illegal land grabs and other offenses. They accused him of supporting the ruling party leaders involved in the crisis. The protest was fueled by anger over alleged injustices.

The women, armed with sticks and brooms, demanded the arrest of Shankar Sardar, whom they accused of illegally seizing ‘barga’ land and handing it over for pisciculture farms. Barga land is cultivated by someone other than the owner, with a share of the produce going to the owner. The women claimed Sardar also interfered with government schemes like MGNREGA and PMAY.

“He also used to snatch our job cards under MGNREGA as well as the cards for the government housing scheme under PMAY. If anyone protested, they were beaten up. They even stopped supply of food from the fair price shops,” said a protesting woman. The Superintendent of Basirhat district police, Hossain Mehdi Rehman, intervened to calm the situation, and the protesters dispersed peacefully.

In response, Shankar Sardar denied the allegations, suggesting villagers were seeking excuses to target him. Police presence has been increased outside his residence to prevent further incidents. The Sandeshkhali crisis continues to unfold, with tensions running high among the community members involved in the dispute.
