Man and his paramour sentenced to 30 years in prison for raping a minor Dalit girl

A court in Odisha’s Keonjhar district sentenced two individuals, Seikh Shahadat Ali and Amita Karwa, to 30 years of rigorous imprisonment each for sexually abusing a 13-year-old Dalit girl in Joda in 2018. Ali, a school van driver, and Karwa, the victim’s step grandmother, were ordered to pay fines as well.

The victim, who was staying with her maternal grandfather, was sexually abused by Ali with the help of Karwa. The victim’s mother grew suspicious during a vacation and sought help from her brother. The girl was rescued, and she disclosed the abuse. The mother filed a complaint in 2018, leading to the arrest of the perpetrators.

Special public prosecutor, Ganesh Prasad Mohapatra, mentioned that the court relied on witness testimonies and evidence to convict Ali and Karwa. The court also directed the District Legal Services Authority to ensure a financial compensation of Rs 6 lakh for the victim.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of minors and the importance of prompt action and awareness to prevent such heinous crimes. The court’s verdict serves as a warning to individuals involved in such despicable acts, emphasizing the severity of the consequences for such offenses.
