Many apps remain unlisted on Google Play: Industry body

New Delhi, March 3 (IANS) A majority of apps delisted by Google Play last week are yet to be relisted, according to the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI). Expressing concern, the association called the measures unfair and disproportionate as legal procedures are ongoing.

Google removed apps from major Indian companies like Matrimony and Shaadi.com for non-compliance with payment policies. Apps from platforms like Altt, Aha, Truly Madly, Quack Quack, Kuku FM, and FRND were also delisted. Some apps were reinstated after criticism, but many remain unavailable.

The IAMAI criticized Google’s actions as discriminatory and urged favorable terms for Indian app developers. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw called for a meeting with Google to protect the startup ecosystem. The government’s proactive response and commitment were lauded as efforts to resolve the issue.

“We will take all necessary steps to safeguard our startup ecosystem, and I trust that Google will approach this matter reasonably,” the IT Minister stated. The IAMAI urged Google to restore the apps and re-list them on Play Store for a fair resolution.
