Marais Erasmus Set to Retire from International Cricket Umpiring Following Aus-NZ Tests

Veteran South African umpire Marais Erasmus has announced his retirement from international umpiring after the ongoing Test series between New Zealand and Australia. Erasmus, who began his career as a seam-bowling all-rounder for Boland, has officiated in a total of 80 Tests, 124 ODIs, and 43 T20Is for men, as well as 18 women’s T20Is.

In an interview with Cricbuzz, Erasmus expressed his reasons for retiring, stating, “I’ve had enough of being away and living outside of my comfort zone. I think having a more boring life is what I’m looking for.” Despite his decision to step down, Erasmus is proud of his achievements, having won the ICC Umpire of the Year award three times and being a part of the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires since 2010.

Following his retirement, Erasmus plans to take the winter off before transitioning into a mentoring role with Cricket South Africa. He will continue to be involved in domestic cricket and provide guidance to upcoming umpires. Reflecting on his time as an international umpire, Erasmus highlighted the challenges and camaraderie of the job, as well as the privilege of witnessing top players and iconic venues in the cricketing world.

Erasmus’s decision to retire marks the end of a successful career in international umpiring, where he has left a lasting impact on the sport. As he looks forward to a more settled life off the field, his contributions to cricket will be remembered by fans and players alike.
