Martyrs’ Day commemorates the sacrifices made by Mahatma Gandhi and other freedom fighters who fought for India’s independence. On this day, dignitaries including the President and Prime Minister pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi on this day, which is also referred as, Shaheed Diwas.

The day of Martyrs’ Day is a very sad but important event in our country’s history. On January 30th, the day is observed in India as Martyrs’ Day or Shaheed Diwas to remember the father of the nation on his Assassination Day.

Martyrs’ Day History

The Assassination of Mahatma Gandhi is remembered as one of the most sorrowful events in Indian history. This day marks not only a tragic moment for our country but also an occasion to reflect on the sacrifice and fearless stood taken by people who are willing to fight against injustice even if it means giving their lives.

The light turned to darkness on 30 January 1948 when Bapu faced death with dignity despite being shot thrice from close range.

When Mahatma Gandhi made his way to a prayer meeting on 30 January 1948 at 17:17 pm, Godse stepped out of the crowd and fired three bullets into His chest. After three consecutive bullets, Bapu immediately collapsed.

Gandhi’s life came to an end in Birla House, where he was taken back and soon died.

Martyrs Day or Shaheed Diwas in India is celebrated to honour the sacrifice made by brave freedom fighters who fought for freedom. The day provides an opportunity to celebrate their courage, hardships they faced during colonial times as well as what awaits them on this earth after achieving independence from British rule. It also reminds us not to take our own freedoms lightly because if these heroes didn’t fight so tirelessly then there would be no way anyone could ever achieve anything significant without being willing to make great sacrifices first!

On this day, people should introduce their children to the character of Gandhiji and inspire them.

On this day, we should take the time to remember the great men and women who have given their lives for our country. Let’s honour them by attending religious programs in your community so that they will not be forgotten!
