Matsuyama takes historic ninth PGA TOUR victory at Genesis, Theegala 37th
Hideki Matsuyama Makes History with Victory at The Genesis Invitational
Japanese golfer Hideki Matsuyama has made history by securing a three-stroke victory at The Genesis Invitational, becoming the leading Asian golfer with the most PGA TOUR titles with nine career wins. The 31-year-old pulled off a remarkable final round performance, shooting a sensational 9-under 62 to win comfortably from Will Zalatoris and Luke List.
Matsuyama’s historic win, worth $4 million from the $20 million purse, has moved him to No. 20 in the world rankings, with the entire major season ahead of him. With 18 wins worldwide, Matsuyama’s victory puts him at the forefront of Asian golfers on the PGA TOUR.
The renowned Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles witnessed Matsuyama’s exceptional performance, which included nine birdies and no bogeys, making it the lowest final day score in the club’s history. This win also marked the end of a frustrating two-year title drought for Matsuyama, breaking the tie with Korea’s K.J. Choi for most victories by an Asian player.
Matsuyama expressed his disappointment at not being able to receive The Genesis Invitational trophy from tournament host Tiger Woods, who had to withdraw from the event due to illness. “You know, to win in this tournament was one of my goals ever since I became a pro. After Tiger being the host, that goal became a lot bigger. A little disappointed I wasn’t able to take a picture with Tiger today,” said Matsuyama.
In a congratulatory message, Tiger Woods, who withdrew from the event on Friday, offered his congratulations to Matsuyama on his incredible win, praising his record-breaking 62 and comeback from six shots back. Matsuyama’s victory also makes him the second Asian to win The Genesis Invitational, following Chinese Taipei’s T.C. Chen in 1987.
The Genesis Invitational saw Indian-American Sahith Theegala finishing in T-37th place and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler in T-10, while Rory McIlroy finished T-24. The tournament host, Tiger Woods, had to withdraw from the event due to illness, but he congratulated Matsuyama on his victory.
Matsuyama’s remarkable performance at The Genesis Invitational has solidified his position as one of the leading figures in Asian golf, and his victory will undoubtedly be celebrated by golf enthusiasts worldwide.
