Messi explains retirement not currently a consideration

Argentine football star Lionel Messi has expressed in an interview that he has not yet thought about retirement and age will not dictate when he decides to end his playing career. The 36-year-old mentioned that he will retire only when he feels he is unable to contribute or loses his enjoyment for the game.

Speaking to the Big Time podcast, Messi stated, “I know that the moment I feel that I am no longer performing, that I am no longer enjoying it or helping my teammates [I will retire].” He emphasized that he is very self-critical and will make the decision without considering his age, focusing solely on his performance and enjoyment of the game.

After securing the 2022 FIFA World Cup title with Argentina, where he scored two goals in the final against France and received the Golden Ball award, Messi reflected on his achievements in football. Despite previously hinting at retirement due to his age, he now appears less certain about his future, stating, “I haven’t thought about it yet. For now, I try to enjoy each day, each moment, without thinking about the future.”

For now, Messi continues to play for Inter Miami, having scored 16 goals and provided seven assists in 19 appearances since joining the team last July. With a strong focus on enjoying the game and contributing to his team, Messi remains uncertain about when he will eventually retire but is determined to continue playing as long as he can contribute and enjoy the sport.
