Meta experiences massive outage as Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger malfunction for millions of users

In a major outage for Meta, Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Threads experienced a global shutdown affecting millions of users, including in India. Despite no official announcement from the company, users faced difficulties accessing their accounts and feeds. Website outage tracker Downdetector reported over 1 lakh Facebook outage reports and over 20,000 Instagram outages globally.

The outage led to users being logged out of Facebook, inability to refresh Instagram feeds, and errors on Threads. While WhatsApp, also owned by Meta, remained operational, the company faced one of the worst outages in years. Users took to social media to express their frustrations, with software engineer Alessandro Paluzzi and others highlighting the widespread impact of the outage.

This incident marks a significant setback for Meta, with a similar outage occurring in 2021 affecting Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The company has yet to address the cause of the outage, leaving users to speculate on the reasons behind the widespread disruption. The outage serves as a reminder of the dependence on social media platforms and the potential risks of such widespread technical issues.
