Meta leads as global extended reality headset shipments drop by 19%

Global Extended Reality (XR) headset shipments dropped 19% in 2023, with Meta leading the market at 59%. The decline was due to lack of compelling new headsets and use cases beyond gaming. The launch of Sony PlayStation VR2 and Meta Quest 3 helped soften the drop.

According to a Counterpoint report, Meta’s strategic pricing of Quest 2 made it popular among budget-conscious consumers in 2023. Sony secured the second position in the XR market with the successful launch of PSVR2. Gaming remains the primary driver for XR headset sales.

The report highlighted challenges like motion sickness, bulky form factors, and noticeable lag in XR technology. Apple’s entry with the Vision Pro is expected to boost content and use case development, attracting more players to the XR segment. Stay tuned for further developments in the XR market.
