Mumbai woman cured of epilepsy after undergoing brain surgery to remove a portion of her brain

A young Mumbai woman, Smita Trivedi, has been cured of a 12-year-old epilepsy after a successful brain surgery conducted by neurosurgeon Dr. Samir Parekh at Apex Hospitals in Kandivali. Smita, who has been struggling with the disease since college, underwent a temporal lobectomy in November 2023, which resulted in a significant improvement in her health condition.

Smita’s journey with epilepsy started when she suffered her first epileptic attack 12 years ago. The disease caused her recurring headaches and other problems, hindering her professional and personal life. Despite being on heavy medication for years, the condition did not show significant improvement, prompting her husband to seek help from Dr. Parekh.

Following a thorough examination, Dr. Parekh recommended a brain surgery to remove the affected temporal lobe on the left side of Smita’s brain. The surgery was successful, and Smita, post-surgery, experienced remarkable progress. She was able to resume her normal life within a few days and gradually reduce her medication intake.

Epilepsy affects millions globally, with nearly 1.2 crore Indians suffering from the disease. Many individuals do not receive proper treatment due to social stigma, lack of awareness, and limited access to healthcare. The successful case of Smita Trivedi highlights the importance of timely intervention and expert medical care in managing epilepsy effectively.
