Musk files lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman for breaching agreement on AI

San Francisco, March 1 (IANS) Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, accusing them of violating their original agreements related to artificial intelligence (AI).

The lawsuit, filed in a San Francisco court, focuses on OpenAI’s GPT-4 natural language model. Musk alleges that OpenAI and Microsoft improperly licensed GPT-4, despite agreeing to keep artificial general intelligence (AGI) capabilities non-profit and dedicated to humanity.

According to the lawsuit, Musk has long been concerned about the potential dangers of AGI to humanity. The lawsuit outlines complaints of contract breach, fiduciary duty violation, and unfair business practices.

Musk was a board member of OpenAI until 2018, when the research was open to the public. OpenAI’s research on the algorithm “Transformers” drew interest from various communities looking to enhance the models.

Sam Altman became CEO of OpenAI in 2019. In September 2020, OpenAI entered into an exclusive licensing agreement with Microsoft for its GPT-3 language model, which did not include rights to AGI.

Musk’s lawsuit aims to ensure that OpenAI adheres to its original mission of developing AGI for the benefit of humanity, rather than for personal gain by individuals or tech companies.
