Naomi Campbell Appeals Charity Trustee Ban, Claims Fake Email Impersonation in Fund Misuse Scandal

Naomi Campbell was banned from being a trustee for the charity Fashion for Relief after an investigation by the England and Wales watchdog following allegations of mismanagement of charity funds.

The charity Fashion for Relief was started by Naomi Campbell after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 to conduct fundraising fashion events to help victims of natural disasters.

Naomi Campbell Appeals Charity Ban, Alleges Fake Email Impersonation

After a series of allegations of financial misconduct, the UK watchdog, the Charity Commission, conducted a three-year investigation and uncovered a series of misappropriations of funds for causes other than charity. Only 8.5% of the charity’s expenditure went on charitable grants from 2016 to 2022.

The investigation also revealed that a major portion of the funds meant for charity was used for organizing a number of supposedly charity fundraising fashion events. Additionally, funds from Fashion for Relief were used to settle bills for Campbell’s stay in luxurious hotels. This led to the watchdog imposing a five-year ban on Campbell as a charity trustee.

Campbell, in her defense, alleged that documents submitted to the watchdog were erroneous and led to the conclusion of her involvement in the charity’s running. The model claimed that a fake email was sent to impersonate her in communications with the Charity Commission, which prevented her from answering the Commission’s questions and allegations.

Campbell said in a statement,

“I want to shine a light on how easy it is to fake identities online and prevent anybody else from going through what I have been through. I want to ensure that those responsible are held accountable and justice is done.”

Campbell added,

“I was not in control of my charity; I put the control in the hands of a legal employer. We are investigating to find out what happened and how. Everything I do and every penny I ever raised goes to charity.”

The case will be heard on Friday in a tribunal.
