On 21st May 1991, Rajiv Gandhi was in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu where he was assassinated by terrorist organization Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) through a human bomb or suicide bomb. P.V. The Congress government led by Narasimha Rao, which came to power after the 1991 elections, declared May 21 as National Anti-Terrorism Day to pay tribute to Rajiv Gandhi and promote awareness about the consequences of terrorist activities.
This day is being celebrated every year since the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. On this day, an attempt is made to send a message among the common people about how terrorism harms the country. This day was started after the former Prime Minister Late Rajiv Gandhi died in a terrorist attack. Terrorism not only takes the lives of innocent people but also endangers the peace and security of society and the country.
