National Flag Day In The United States is celebrated every year on 14 June. This day marks the commemoration of the official adoption of the American flag. “Stars and Stripes” was adopted officially as the National flag of America by the Continental Congress. This ceremony took place on June 14, 1777. This occasion took place during the revolutionary war. Before this day, different flags are designated to represent various interests and colonies with different slogans. However, this day made all colonies adopt a single flag and a single slogan.
The first flag that was adopted portrayed 13 white and red strips that we encounter today. However, over the past decades, the arrangement and the number of stars have changed significantly. This change is directly proportional to the addition of several states. Moreover, since 1960, the current flag has remained unchanged. This Flag Day is also called National Flag Day in the U.S.
History
The idea behind celebrating this day and marking the day as Flag Day came from various sources. A Wisconsin schoolteacher, Bernard J. Cigrand started celebrating this day as Flag Birthday with the children and students since 1885. It was Bernard J. Cigrand’s essay that was published in a Chicago newspaper which encouraged Americans to mark this day as an auspicious occasion to celebrate the flag.
In 1888, the American Flag Day Association was formed by William T. Kerr. William T. Kerr dedicated his whole life to the organization. It is also claimed that, in 1861, George Morris organized the very first formal commemoration of Flag Day at Hartford. However, finally in 1916, by President Woodrow Wilson, June 14 was proclaimed Flag Day legally. The U.S. Congress 1949 permanently established June 14 as National Flag Day.
