Annually, February 1 is marked as National Freedom Day in the North American country, United States to commemorate the anniversary of the day in 1865 when then US president Abraham Lincoln signed a resolution to effectively end slavery in the country. The resolution was later renamed the 13th Amendment.

As per archives.org, the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution provides that “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”

In the middle of the 20th century, Major Richard Robert Wright Sr., who had been freed from slavery in 1865 following the enactment of the Resolution at the end of the Civil War, expressed his desire to mark the date as National Freedom Day and invited local leaders to meet in Philadelphia to seek their support for designating February 1, the anniversary of the 13th Amendment, as a celebration. Richard Roberts died in 1947, the same year the bill was officially passed by the U.S. Congress.
