National Mathematics Day is on 22nd December. It is the birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan, a legendary Indian mathematician. He is famous for his infinite series, number theories as well as mathematical analysis to name a few. The day is observed to honor his legacy and his contribution to the field of mathematics. He was born to an Iyengar Brahmin family in Tamil Nadu in 1887. His early life was tough as he belonged to a very poor family. But he had a keen inclination towards calculation at a young age by the time he turned 15 he got a copy of Elementary Results in Pure and Applied Mathematics by George Shoobridge Carr’s Synopsis.
In order to earn his bread and butter, he started working as a clerk but contained researching mathematics parallelly. He soon got to work with many renowned universities including Trinity College. Back in 1918, he was one of the few people who were invited to the London Mathematical Society in Britain. There he was the youngest member of the Royal Society. The former Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh marked 22nd December as National Mathematics Day as a way to pay tribute to legendary Srinivasa Ramanujan.
