History
The inaugural Workshop on Industrial Safety was hosted by India’s Ministry of Labor and Employment in 1965. In collaboration with employers’ unions, state and local governments, other labor unions, and organizations, it took place from December 11 to December 13. The many organizations attending the meeting realized that National and State Safety Councils were necessary.
The Standing Labor Committee’s 24th session in February 1966 approved the National Safety Council (NSC) proposal. The NSC was established on March 4 of that year by the Ministry of Labor and registered as a people’s confidence under the Bombay Public Trust Act of 1950 after initially becoming a society underneath the Societies Registration Act of 1860. To celebrate the National Safety Council’s creation and promote safety, National Safety Day was first observed in 1971.
Significance
The event provides a chance to emphasize the value of security measures and procedures in preventing accidents. It aims to broaden the movement for safety, health, and the environment (SHE). Gathering together participants from various industry sectors and enticing them to join the SHE movement are some of the day’s other goals. Additionally, it attempts to raise awareness of SHE initiatives and serve as a reminder to employers, employees, and other stakeholders that proper measures must be taken to create a safer workplace.
