National Sorry Day

Every year on May 26, National Sorry Day in Australia urges the nation’s colonist-descended citizens to recall the maltreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Why? Indigenous people were forcibly abducted from their parents during the twentieth century to be “successfully integrated” into white Australian society. The “Stolen Generations” are what they’re called. It took several Australian government regimes to give a formal apology to Indigenous Australians, but it was finally done, and efforts are being taken to rectify the damage inflicted by splitting native communities together to this day.

National Sorry Day: History

The inaugural National Sorry Day was held in 1998, a year since the “Bringing Them Home” report, which was the outcome of a government investigation into child smuggling in the twentieth century, was presented to the Australian Parliament. The idea of an unqualified apology and the suggestion that a piece of the government budget is set aside for reparations were among the report’s suggestions.

When Kevin Rudd was Head Of state in 2008, he issued a formal apology. Former Minister John Howard did the best he could in 1999 by introducing a “Motion of Reconciliation” that conveyed remorse and sympathy but made no admission of guilt. In the meanwhile, a proposal to rebrand the day “National Day of Healing” was approved in 2005.

Rudd’s unreserved apology was what touched Australians’ hearts. His Parliament was the first to endorse the goals of the “Closing the Gap” campaign, which aimed to improve the healthcare and dignity of indigenous peoples of all ages. Between 2009 and 2019, Oxfam Australia ran Closing the Gap, which was then passed over to Aussies for Native Title and Healing, who continue to issue an annual report.

National Sorry Day is a day to commemorate the Stolen Generations’ courage and focus on how all Australians can contribute to the nation’s and people’s rehabilitation. While the Stolen Generations hold this anniversary in high regard, it is also observed by Australians all around the country.
