National Technology Day is celebrated every year on 11 May across the country. This day commemorates the achievements of engineers and scientists in the field of science and technology. In the year 1998, under the leadership of the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, India conducted 5 consecutive nuclear bomb tests one after the other. This was Pokhran-2. The first nuclear test was conducted in May 1974. After the success of Pokhran-2, the government announced to celebrate May 11 as National Technology Day. Which made India an official member of the elite club of nuclear power countries. Since then, this event has become an annual event aimed at highlighting India’s scientific inquiry, technological creativity and pursuit of innovation.
Every year, on this day, the Technology Development Board of India awards national awards to various individuals for their contribution to indigenous technology. National Technology Day reminds us of how the world is progressing in the field of science and technology, especially in the development of nuclear technology, and how India has made its place in it. Several seminars, conferences and exhibitions are organized across the country to mark India’s technological prowess.
