New Zealand announced a three-day nationwide lockdown from Wednesday till Friday, over a suspect of one case of delta variant detected in Auckland. Coromandel is a coastal town where the infected person visited, will be in lockdown for seven days.

According to BBC, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said that the toughest “level 4” rules were required – closing schools, offices, and all businesses with only essential services remaining operational. We have decided on the basis that it is better to start high and go down levels rather than to go low, not contain the virus, and see it move quickly.

What’s the purpose of short lockdown?

Officials said there was a need for a strong response because of the fear of the Delta variant, and because there was no clear link between the new case and the border or quarantine facilities.

Authorities will utilize this time to trace the contact of one infected person and possible locations of its visit.
