New Zealand quick Neil Wagner retires from international cricket

Fast bowler Neil Wagner has announced his retirement from international cricket, after a 12-year-old Test career with 260 wickets in 64 matches. Wagner, 37, revealed the news ahead of New Zealand’s series against Australia, marking the end of an era for the BlackCaps.

Wagner, ranked fifth on New Zealand’s top Test wicket-takers list, will not feature in the starting XI for the first Test against Australia and will depart ahead of the second Test in Christchurch. He played a crucial role in New Zealand’s rise to the top of ICC Test rankings and their victory in the ICC World Test Championship in 2021.

Expressing his emotions, Wagner said, “It’s been an emotional week. It’s not easy to step away from something you’ve given so much to and got so much out of, but it’s now time for others to step up and take this team forward.” He highlighted the importance of his teammates and the pride he feels in the achievements made as a team.

The left-arm pacer debuted for the BlackCaps in 2012 and has since become a key figure in the squad. With nine five-wicket hauls and career-best figures of 7/39 against the West Indies in 2017, Wagner has left an indelible mark on New Zealand cricket. He will be honored during the first Test and at the ANZ New Zealand Cricket Awards on March 13.

Despite retiring from international cricket, Wagner will continue playing for his Major Association Northern Districts and remains open to opportunities both in New Zealand and overseas. His dedication and contributions to the sport will be remembered as he embarks on a new chapter in his cricketing journey.
