NITI Aayog calls for prioritising tech, AI for senior care in India
The NITI Aayog has emphasized the importance of prioritizing technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for senior care in India. In a report titled “Senior Care Reforms in India: Reimagining the Senior Care Paradigm,” released on Friday, the NITI Aayog highlighted the need for special dimensions of senior care in addition to the medical and social aspects. The report categorizes specific interventions needed in terms of empowerment, service delivery, and their inclusions under four core areas: Health, Social, Economic/ Financial, and Digital. The aim is to design an effective and synergized senior care policy to meet the evolving medical and non-medical needs of seniors.
Speaking at the occasion, NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery emphasized the significance of prioritizing technology and AI for senior care, in line with India’s commitment to achieve the goal of Viksit Bharat @2047. He urged for a greater emphasis on the wellbeing and care of the elderly, stressing the need for ageing dignity-driven, safe, and productive policies. Member (Health) NITI Aayog Dr. V.K. Paul echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of ensuring the social security of the elderly.
The report has received support from Saurabh Garg, Secretary, Department of Social Justice and Empowerment (DoSJE), Ministry of Social Justice, who emphasized the broad focus of DoSJE on ageing with dignity, ageing at home, and productive ageing, encompassing social, economic, and health aspects. This collective effort aims to bring a greater focus on senior care and push forward discussions on the necessary steps to achieve a comprehensive senior care policy.
In conclusion, the NITI Aayog’s position paper on senior care reforms in India highlights the importance of incorporating technology and AI in senior care policies, along with a multi-pronged strategy to meet the evolving needs of seniors.
