Bengali Actress Anjana Bhowmik Passes Away at 79

Kolkata, Feb 17 (IANS) – Noted Bengali actress Anjana Bhowmik, well-known for her iconic role as ‘Sujata Mitra’ in the 1968 hit film ‘Chowringhee’, breathed her last at a hospital in Kolkata on Saturday at the age of 79. She is survived by her two daughters, Nilanjana Sengupta and Chandana Sharma, with Nilanjana being married to popular actor Jisshu Sengupta. Bhowmik had been admitted to the hospital for some time due to age-related ailments.

Despite her acting talent, Bhowmik faced tough competition from other prominent actresses of her time, including Suchitra Sen, Sabitri Chattopadhyay, and Supriya Devi. However, she received critical acclaim for her natural acting talent in the lead roles she portrayed and won the hearts of viewers in films like ‘Nayika Sangbad’, ‘Thana Theke Ashchi’, and ‘Mahashweta’, besides ‘Chowringhee’.

In 2012, Bhowmik was honored with a lifetime achievement award by the West Bengal government for her contribution to the Bengali film industry. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences, calling Bhowmik’s death an irreparable loss for the industry and offering sympathy to her family members and fans.

Anjana Bhowmik’s demise marks the end of an era in Bengali cinema, leaving behind a legacy of timeless performances that will be remembered and cherished by her fans and the film fraternity.
