NPCL installs reverse vending machines to recycle plastic waste in Greater Noida

Recently, Noida Power Company Limited (NPCL) has initiated a plastic-free drive through installing reverse vending machines (RVM) at different locations such as TechZone 4, Knowledge Park 4 (KP) and KP1 in Greater Noida. The public can use its benefits by disposing of any kind of plastic like aluminium cans, and pet bottles in the RVMs in exchange they will receive Domino’s, Swiggy and Zing Bus coupons. This will act as a way of encouragement to participate in plastic-free initiatives.

All the plastic collected from these machines will then be given for recycling and later converted to fabric for making caps, jackets, T-shirts, bags etc. The RVMs were installed by Envipure Solution Private Limited in March and are worth of Rs 3.5 lakhs per unit. Reportedly, they have collected 485 plastic bottles by the end of last month i.e. April. 

“To promote a plastic-free Greater Noida and to reduce the impact of plastic waste on the environment, NPCL has taken the initiative to install reverse vending machines,” said Sarnath Ganguly, vice president (Operations) NPCL. A reverse vending machine (RVM) is a type of machine that gives you a reward when plastic is inserted by a person. After collecting all the plastic from the RVMs, it is sent to the factory where they are converted into fibre or recycled goods. 

 “These collected plastic bottles will be converted into fabric in a recycling facility to make T-shirts, bags, caps, and jackets by our service partner. We will distribute the goodies among all who have deposited their plastic waste (using the mobile phone number provided during disposal),” said Ganguly. He further added that Greater Noida alone is able to generate around 20 tonnes of plastic waste every day, making it a vital issue to tackle.
