Online Food Delivery Platform Under Fire After Young Girl Dies from Birthday Cake

New Delhi/Chandigarh, March 31 (IANS) – Netizens are criticizing online food delivery platforms after a 10-year-old girl in Patiala reportedly died post consuming her birthday cake ordered online. The police have registered a case under Sections 273 and 304-A of the Indian Penal Code following a complaint by the girl’s family.

According to reports, the family members alleged that the girl died after eating the cake, and others fell ill too. The bill copy showed no shop named ‘Cake Kanha’ at the registered address in Patiala, raising suspicion that it was a cloud kitchen. Furthermore, a receipt invoice from Zomato indicated billing from Amritsar, not Patiala.

Dr. Nandita Iyer, a food and nutrition columnist, recommended that food delivery platforms like Swiggy and Zomato clearly specify if a listing is a cloud kitchen. She emphasized the need for transparency to ensure customers are aware of where their food is coming from to avoid incidents like this.

Fitness professional Chirag Barjatya highlighted the lack of food safety regulations in cloud kitchens, stating that multiple ‘restaurants’ operate from tiny spaces. He drew attention to hygiene concerns such as expired ingredients and pests, urging consumers to be cautious while ordering from unregulated sources.
