Over 45.8 mn children to receive polio vaccination in Pakistan: Health Ministry

Islamabad, Feb 26 (IANS) – A week-long countrywide polio vaccination campaign is set to kick off in Pakistan starting from Monday. The campaign aims to vaccinate more than 45.8 million children under the age of five, as announced by the Pakistani Health Ministry.

The vaccination campaign will run from Feb. 26 to March 3 across the country, and in 33 districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province from March 2 to 6. In addition to polio vaccines, the children will also receive vitamin A supplements to enhance their immunity.

According to the Health Ministry, this is the second nationwide campaign of the year following the detection of poliovirus in sewage samples from 19 districts in January and 126 samples in 2023. The first campaign of 2024 took place from Jan. 8 to 14, where over 43 million children were vaccinated.

The Pakistani Health Ministry is taking proactive measures to eradicate polio from the country and ensure the well-being of children. The vaccination campaigns are crucial in preventing the spread of the virus and protecting the young population from this debilitating disease.

The efforts to combat polio in Pakistan highlight the government’s commitment to public health and the welfare of its citizens. With the vaccination campaign in place, authorities aim to protect children from the threat of poliovirus and create a healthier future for the upcoming generations.
